Hodgkin lymphoma (HL)
On December 29, 2023, my life took an unexpected turn. My family and I were traveling to California for the holidays when, during takeoff back to Georgia, I felt a sudden pop in my chest as the cabin pressure changed. I was immediately struck by intense pain, unable to move or catch my breath. Determined to hold on until we landed, I braced myself through the agony.
After landing, I visited urgent care where I was told nothing was wrong and that my symptoms were likely due to anxiety. Deep down, I knew something was seriously amiss, so the next day, I went to the emergency room. Alone in a hallway bed, a doctor approached me with devastating news, “We found an 8cm mass on your heart. You need to see an oncologist right away.” In that moment, I felt the weight of the world pressing down on me as I faced a dark and uncertain reality.
Unsure of where to begin, I was referred to an oncologist who believed I had a thymoma and assured me there was no cause for alarm. He recommended a consultation with a cardiothoracic surgeon. After meeting with this surgeon, however, my hope was shattered when I learned that the mass was not a thymoma but Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). My thoughts spiraled to my two young children, and I feared they would grow up without me, their memories of me fading as time went on.
After two biopsies and one surgery, I was diagnosed with stage 2 HL. I began ABVD chemotherapy which lasted six months. Following chemotherapy, I underwent three weeks of proton therapy. Now, I am awaiting the results of my final PET scan, praying for the news that I am in remission.
Throughout this challenging journey, I was inspired to create a fully refundable NFT charity collection on Blastr with 100% of the proceeds donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). This project exemplifies how innovative technology can foster meaningful change and support those in need.
Hearing the words “you have cancer” is something that most people never imagine they will face. Yet, for many, it becomes a harsh reality that can strike unexpectedly and often. When I received my diagnosis, it felt like my world had been turned upside down. However, throughout this challenging journey, I was fortunate to have an incredible care team by my side. Their expertise, compassion, and unwavering support made all the difference in navigating this difficult time.
This experience has profoundly transformed my perspective on life. I now see the world through a different lens, one that is colored by gratitude and awareness of life’s fragility. I appreciate the small moments ― the laughter of my children, the warmth of the sun, and the simple joy of spending time with loved ones. What once seemed mundane now feels precious, and I approach each day with a renewed sense of purpose.
