After being diagnosed with indolent Follicular non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL) in 1999, I set off on a course of “Watch and Wait” for two years. This was followed by an idiotype vaccine trial and immunotherapy resulting in some clinical success, but with short-lived remissions.
In December 2005 while three months pregnant, I heard those words, "you have cancer". I was diagnosed with CML but couldn’t start my treatment of Gleevec until my son was born. Isaiah was born a healthy baby and shortly after, I began my daily chemo pill, Gleevec.

Cancer. That is a word that is scary. So many of us have friends, family and co-workers that are impacted by some type of cancer, but you never think it will be you. The word conjures up fear. Fear of treatment, fear of death and fear of what will be expected of you to deal with and hopefully survive.
We were living the American dream. I married my college sweetheart Michael, and we celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary last fall. We have a wonderful son, who is engaged to a fabulous young woman, and they have launched their life together in Indianapolis.
My name is Brianna Ciambra I live in New York and this is my story. When I was eleven, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I went through two-and-a-half years of chemotherapy which consisted of IV meds, spinal taps, steroids etc. I lost my hair during the chemo, which was very hard. I also developed a condition called Avascular necrosis.
