Autoimmune diseases encompass a broad category of related diseases in which a person's immune system attacks his or her own tissue. The immune system is meant to protect the body by responding to invading microorganisms, such as viruses or bacteria. Autoimmune diseases result from immune cells making a mistake and attacking the very cells that they are meant to protect. Some examples of autoimmune diseases include:

  • Lupus
  • POEMS syndrome
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
