Subaru Loves to Care Promise
(Pictured above:Dave Wright Subaru and LLS deliver blankets to families at the Helen Nassif Community Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids, IA.)
For the second year in a row, Subaru of America and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) will spread love, hope and warmth to cancer patients and their families in communities across the country.
In June, Subaru and LLS brought the Subaru Loves to Care initiative to life at 475 Subaru retailers across the country. Visitors to Subaru retailers were given the chance to share personalized messages of hope to patients in their local communities, or write an online message of support at www.lls.org/subaru. Those who wrote a message of hope at a Subaru retailer also received a bracelet to help spread awareness of LLS and the automaker’s goal to provide hope and care, one gesture at a time.
In July, Subaru retailers will deliver nearly 95,000 messages of hope to patients alongside 38,000 blankets to provide comfort and warmth as they continue their fight against cancer, while children battling the disease will receive arts and crafts kits.
The Iowa Chapter would like to Thank the following Subaru Retailers: Ramsey Subaru (Urbandale), Dave Wright Subaru (Hiawatha), C & S Car Company (Waterloo), Riley Subaru (Dubuque), Jensen Subaru (Sioux City) for their local partnership. In Iowa, we will deliver 400 blankets and 50 craft kits to local hospitals.

LLS Statement on Senate Healthcare Bill and Efforts Related to Cost of Cancer Care
LLS has serious concerns about the Senate’s healthcare bill unveiled Thursday, which would put cancer patients at risk of facing increased barriers to accessing life-saving treatments. LLS responded to this timely news by posting a statement from Dr. Lou on LLS.org, including this quote: “The Senate bill represents a step backward for cancer patients – making it harder for patients to afford the often-costly treatments they need to combat their cancer. LLS urges Senators to oppose this bill.” See our statement here. Further, the Office of Public Policy will be submitting a letter directly to the Senate next week detailing our concerns, and urging a bipartisan solution to address the significant obstacles to accessing affordable care.
These actions are part of our larger effort to advocate for patients and take a stand on issues related to the Cost of Cancer Care. The communications and policy teams have been collaborating on a series of activities related to this issue, including national media outreach to give voice to cancer patients. This outreach resulted in this recent placement in the Huffington Post, featuring a story of twins Kenedi and Kendal Breyfogle’s AML diagnosis, and their mom Abby Breyfogle’s #IAmAPreexistingCondition video, with a link to the LLS Advocacy Facebook Page.
American Society of Clinical Oncology Meeting
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago (June 2 to June 6), brought together an unprecedented 38,000 researchers, clinicians, pharmaceutical companies and advocacy organizations, including representative from LLS, to share the latest data and advances in cancer research and treatment. Read two LLS blogs covering the highlights, which include:
Promising data from precision medicine clinical trials – drugs that treat patients based on genetics instead of where the tumor is in their body. In the study of a drug called larotrectinib, the patients treated had 17 different types of tumors and 76 percent showed response to treatment. Read more on The LLS Blog (1).
Innovations in CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell immunotherapy, which LLS has been funding for two decades. CAR T is an emerging approach that reprograms the patient’s own immune T cells to find and kill cancer cells. Two studies presented on CAR T showed promise for CLL (as a combination therapy) and myeloma patients. Read more on The LLS Blog (2). |
