Introducing Our Medical Debt Case Management Program

No patient should be worse off because they received cancer care


The cost of cancer care is extraordinary. Too often, patients – even those with quality insurance – face crippling medical bills that can leave a long-lasting impact on them and their families.

No one chooses to have cancer and no patient wants their treatment to be a financial burden. Unfortunately, cancer care forces too many patients into financial distress, blocking them from important opportunities and even delaying proper healthcare—sometimes for years.

Patients deserve better. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) mission is to improve the lives of patients, survivors, and their families. Helping to free patients from the crushing burden of medical debt is a key way we do that.

It’s possible to reduce your medical debt.

The Medical Debt Case Management Program provides one-on-one, in-depth personalized support to empower patients to address their medical debt. Services include but are not limited to:

  • Address financial concerns, including managing existing medical debt and planning for upcoming medical expenses
  • Identify resources such as charity care organizations or manufacturer patient assistance programs that may reduce the financial burden
  • Assist with insurance plan evaluation and enrollment, such as Medicaid, Medicare, Marketplace plans, and employer-sponsored health insurance
  • Navigate insurance benefits, denials of care, and out-of-pocket costs
The program is not a debt forgiveness program, does NOT pay off medical debt, and cannot assist with debt that is in collections. Program case managers work with patients and offer ways to help manage current debt and prevent accumulating more.

Eligibility Criteria

Patient must be:

  • In active treatment for blood cancer, including active surveillance or follow-up.
  • a US citizen or permanent resident of the United States or a US territory.
  • Receiving treatment in the United States or a US territory.
  • In need of help with outstanding medical debt, affordability, or access issues related to a blood cancer diagnosis and/or treatment.

To ensure our case management team can provide the in-depth, hands-on support required, we limit the number of new cases our case management team can accept each day.
